Start with the learner, not the language
The language question is usually asked the wrong way round. Teams debate "should we add Hindi?" as if it were a feature decision, like dark mode. It is not — it is a market decision, and the honest starting point is a simple question: in the homes and classrooms of the students you intend to serve, what language is science actually explained in?
For some platforms the answer is unambiguous. A test-prep product for students of English-medium private schools in metro cities can reasonably operate in English alone. A platform built for government-school students in the Hindi belt cannot — English-only content will be technically available to those students and practically useless to many of them. The uncomfortable cases are everything in between, which is where most Indian K-12 platforms actually live.
Before reading any further, write one sentence describing your primary learner: their board, their medium of instruction, their city tier, and who pays for the product. Every recommendation below depends on that sentence.
The three honest answers: English, Hindi, or genuinely mixed
English-only makes sense when your learners study in English-medium schools, your brand is positioned as aspirational or exam-focused, and your sales motion targets parents who explicitly want English exposure. Its advantage is simplicity: one content pipeline, one QA pass, one set of assets to maintain. Its risk is a ceiling — you are choosing to compete in the market’s most crowded segment.
Hindi-first makes sense when your learners are in Hindi-medium schools or in English-medium schools where classroom explanation actually happens in Hindi — a far more common situation than school signboards suggest. Hindi-first platforms often face less direct competition and earn stronger word-of-mouth in their communities, at the cost of a harder conversation with some fee-paying parents who equate English with advancement.
Bilingual — the same lesson available in both languages, with the student or school choosing — is the most defensible position and the most demanding one. It doubles parts of your content surface and complicates your UI, but it matches how mixed classrooms really work: the teacher toggles languages sentence by sentence, and a platform that lets the learner do the same feels natural rather than translated. If your learner sentence from the previous section included the words "tier 2", "tier 3", or "both mediums", bilingual is almost certainly your end state; the only real question is sequencing.
What NEP 2020 signals — directionally, not numerically
The National Education Policy 2020 places sustained emphasis on multilingual education and on teaching in the home language or mother tongue, especially in the foundational and preparatory years. Whatever the pace of implementation on the ground (it varies enormously by state and school), the direction of policy pressure is clear: Indian education is being pushed toward more instruction in Indian languages, not less.
For a platform builder, the practical reading is not "English is finished" — English retains enormous pull as a language of examinations, higher education, and employment, and no policy document changes what parents ask for at admission time. The practical reading is narrower: a platform that can serve Hindi (and eventually other Indian languages) is aligned with where policy, state procurement, and school expectations are drifting, while an English-only platform is betting that its particular segment will remain insulated from that drift. That may be a fine bet for a metro test-prep brand; it is a risky bet for anyone selling into schools at scale.
Treat NEP 2020 as a tailwind for bilingual capability, not a mandate with a deadline — it rewards platforms that keep their options open.
Voice-over, captions, on-screen localisation: three different things
When vendors and teams say a library "is available in Hindi", they can mean three very different levels of localisation, and conflating them causes expensive misunderstandings.
Voice-over means the narration audio is re-recorded in Hindi. The student hears the entire explanation in Hindi, which is what drives comprehension — but the text visible inside the animation (labels on a diagram, terms on screen, worked steps in a maths problem) remains in the original language, usually English. For science and maths this is often acceptable — even desirable, since the technical terms students must recognise in exams are frequently the English ones.
Captions (or subtitles) mean time-synced text — SRT or VTT files — displayed under the video. Hindi captions over English audio give a Hindi-reading student a parallel track to follow; English captions over Hindi audio support the reverse, and both support sound-off viewing on phones. Captions are a reading aid layered on the video — they change nothing the learner hears or the animation shows.
Full on-screen localisation means the video itself is rebuilt: every label, heading, and piece of animated text is re-typeset in Hindi, and the visuals are re-rendered. This is the only level at which the video is truly and completely in Hindi — and it is by far the most expensive, because it requires the editable source projects and real production work per video, not just an audio session. Whenever someone quotes you a price for "Hindi content", your first clarifying question should be: which of these three is it?
The cost-and-effort ladder
Put together, the options form a ladder of rising cost. Rung one: English-only, with English captions. Rung two: add Hindi captions to the English videos — the cheapest way to give Hindi-reading students any support at all, and a genuinely useful stopgap. Rung three: Hindi voice-over across the library, so every lesson can be heard in either language; on-screen text stays English. Rung four: full on-screen localisation of the videos that need it most — typically early-primary content and language-heavy subjects, where English on screen is a real barrier. Rung five: full localisation of everything, including PDFs, notes, and assessments.
Two things about the ladder are worth internalising. First, you do not have to climb it uniformly — localising Class 1–5 fully while keeping Class 9–12 at the voice-over rung is a perfectly coherent strategy, because younger learners depend far more on on-screen language. Second, your position on the ladder is constrained by your licence: climbing past rung three requires source files, which takes us back to the licensing questions covered in edupotion.com/blog/white-label-content-licence-checklist. If you license only rendered videos today but suspect you will want rung four later, secure source-file access now.
How to pilot before you commit
Language strategy is unusually cheap to test, because you do not need to convert your whole library to learn the answer. Pick one class and one subject where your users are active — Class 8 Science is a common choice because the concepts are visual and the vocabulary is technical — and offer the same chapters in both languages behind a simple toggle. Then watch behaviour, not surveys: which track do students start on, which do they finish on, and do completion rates differ? Parents will often tell you they want English; their children’s watch time will tell you what actually gets understood.
Run the pilot for a full topic cycle, including whatever assessment follows it, and talk to a handful of teachers or parents afterwards about why students switched — the "why" matters more than the raw numbers at pilot scale. The decision, in the end, is not really English versus Hindi. It is a sequencing question: which language do your actual learners need first, which rung of the localisation ladder serves them well enough to start, and what must you secure today — in rights, in source files, in platform design — so that climbing the next rung is a decision rather than a rebuild.
